Principles of Wilderness Survival

survival plant guide

It doesn't matter if your bushwalking is camping or bushwalking; you could find yourself in an emergency. These basic principles will help you survive in the wilderness.

The first is to remain calm and positive. That's a huge step in the right direction when it comes to survival.

Fundamental Principles

You should be familiar with the basics of wilderness survival, regardless of whether you are a seasoned adventurer or someone who just loves hiking and camping. These simple steps could be life-saving in an emergency.

Being positive and optimistic are two key ingredients to staying alive. Survival rates are also improved by having a positive attitude and refusing give up.

Shelter

Shelter is a fundamental human need. Shelter can be made from leaves, branches and other natural materials or can be constructed using man-made structures like a cave, cabin, or other types of wood.

First, seek shelter if you're in an emergency. Shelter can be found anywhere, from trees to abandoned buildings to subway stations.

Water

Water is an essential part of the life on Earth. It exists in all three phases, liquid, gas, and connects the major components of our environment: air, clouds, oceans lakes, oceans, vegetation and snowpack.

Water is also an important solvent. It dissolves many types of substances. It assists cells in transporting and using oxygen and other nutrients.

Food

Food is essential for survival. Therefore, it must be stored in a way that keeps it safe for long periods. It is also essential for ensuring that your body gets the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and strong.

There are many types of food you can store in order to stay alive in an emergency. These include energy bars, cookies or crackers, canned products, fresh meat, grains and dehydrated and freeze dried food.

Compass

Knowing how to use a map and a compasses is crucial for survival, no matter whether you're on the water or in the woods. A map shows landmark locations, while a magnetic compass tracks the Earth's magnetic fields.

The needle aligns to the horizontal component in the Earth's magnet field so that the compass points North. The compass doesn't point at the geographical North Pole, which is the true North because the Earth’s magnetic field isn’t straight.

Fire

A chemical reaction that produces heat or light from combustible materials is known as fire. These flames can be used to heat water, cook and lighten the room.

building a survival shelter

While fire is a complex and potentially dangerous chemical process, it plays an important role within nature. Fires can create habitat patches which allow plants and animals to thrive.

First Aid

Basic knowledge of first aid can make the difference in saving a life or dying for someone who has been injured or is suffering from an illness. It can help save a person's life until they reach paramedics or are admitted to the hospital.

To help someone, it is important to stay calm and evaluate the situation. Once stabilized, the first aider must start administering first aid by checking the airway and breathing.

Fear

It is vital that people are able to cope with fear. You are more valuable to your brain than your body in emergency situations.

Our sympathetic nervous system (part our autonomic nervous systems) activates a biochemical reaction when we perceive danger. This prepares us for fight and flight. This process causes the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.

FAQ

Why are knot-tying skills important for survival

All over the world, knots are used to attach ropes and fishing lines to ladders and other items. They are also useful for tying bags shut and securing objects to trees. When you are required to tie yourself to a tree, rope, or secure your shelter, the ability to make knots can be a lifesaver.

What's the time taken to find help once you are lost?

This depends on several factors:

  • You are where you need to be
  • Which terrain are yours?
  • No matter whether you have cell reception
  • If someone has ever seen you
  • Whether you're injured
  • Dehydration can be caused by several factors.
  • You have been drinking water?
  • How recently have you eaten?
  • It doesn't matter if you are wearing the right clothing
  • It doesn't matter if you have a compass and a chart.
  • How familiar are you with the area
  • How long have you been lost?
  • How long have you spent searching for help?
  • How long does people take to notice you are gone?
  • It is amazing how quickly they search for you
  • How many rescuers are you able to attract?
  • How many rescues has your family received?

What are the basic skills for survival in the wild?

When you live off the land, the most important thing to learn is how to light a fire. It's not just a matter of lighting a match; you must learn how to start a fire using friction and flint. You must also know how to not get burned by the flames.

It is important to understand how to create shelter using natural materials such as leaves, grasses, and trees. For warmth at night you will need to learn how to best use these materials. And finally, you'll need to know how much water you need to survive.

Other Survival Skills

While these things can help you live longer, they won't be as important as learning how to light a flame. Even though you can eat many types of animals and plants you won’t be cooking them if the fire doesn’t start.

You'll also need to know how best and where to find food, including edible plants and animals. This is important because you could be starving or becoming sick if you don’t know.

How to Navigate Without a Compass or With One

A compass doesn't tell you where you are going, but it does help you find your way back home if you lose your bearings.

There are three ways to navigate:

  1. By landmarks
  2. Use a compass to find magnetic North
  3. By stars

These are objects you recognize immediately when you come across them. They are trees, buildings or rivers. They are useful as they can be used to show you where you are.

Magnetic North simply indicates the direction in which Earth's magnetic field points. You'll see that the sun appears as if it is moving across the sky when you look up. The sun actually moves around the earth because of the earth's magnetic fields. While it may appear that the sun moves across the sky, in fact, the sun actually moves around its horizon. The sun is overhead at noon. At midnight, the sun will be directly below you. The earth's magnetic field is constantly changing, so the exact direction of the magnetic North pole changes every day. This can mean that you could be off track for a few days.

Another way to navigate is with stars. Stars appear to rise and set over the horizon. These are points in space you can use to find your exact location relative to other locations.

  • The downside to this type of shelter is that it does not generally offer 360 degrees of protection and unless you are diligent in your build or have some kind of tarp or trash bags, it will likely not be very resistant to water. (hiconsumption.com)
