Water Purification in Wilderness

wilderness survival first aid kit

Water purification can be described as the process of removing chemical, biological contaminants, suspended solids, and gases. You can either use chemical processes such filtration or physical processes such filtration to purify your water.

Water that looks clean can still contain harmful bacteria, like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, which are invisible to the naked eye. Water that appears clean should be filtered before drinking.

Water

Water purification in the wilderness is possible. Untreated water can lead to illness. It's even more dangerous if the water source is contaminated by bacteria, viruses, or parasites.

You should always have a filter with you, whether you are in the wilderness or on vacation. These filters filter out large particles from the water and then treat it with chemicals to kill parasites, germs and other organisms.

Many filters contain an inner element, or cartridge, that has microscopic pores. These pores catch bacteria and protozoa. These pores become less effective as strained matter builds up over time. Before drinking, you can add iodine (or similar chemical treatments) to the water. These products are available in many outdoor stores and are affordable.

Most of these tablets contain iodine or chlorine, which can deactivate microorganisms such as parasitic protozoans and viruses. These chemicals kill them and prevent them causing illness or even death if they're ingested.

These products are fast and easy to disinfect contaminated waters. Follow the directions on the bottle to make sure you are using the correct amount of tablets for the water you are treating.

How to Navigate Without a Compass or With One

A compass is not able to tell you where your destination is, but it can help guide you back home if necessary.

There are three ways to navigate:

  1. By landmarks
  2. By magnetic North (using the compass)
  3. By stars

You recognize landmarks when you see them. These can be trees, buildings, rivers, and so on. They are useful as they can be used to show you where you are.

Magnetic North simply indicates the direction in which Earth's magnetic field points. If you look at the sky, the sun appears like it's moving across the sky. However, the earth's magnet field causes the sun to move about the earth. Although it appears that the sun is moving across the sky and around the horizon, it actually does so. At noon, the sun is directly overhead. The sun is directly beneath you at midnight. The magnetic field of the earth is constantly changing. This means that the exact direction and orientation of the North pole magnetically changes each day. This means you might be off the course by quite a bit during a single day.

Another method of navigation is to use stars. The stars appear to rise or set above the horizon. These are fixed points that can be used to pinpoint your location relative other locations.
